Arunima Sibha was born in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, on July 20, 1988. Arunima’s mother was a Supervisor in the health department, and her father worked as an engineer for the Indian Army. Unfortunately, she lost her father when she was merely three years old. Arunima also has a little brother and an elder sister. When her father passed away, his brother-in-law took over the family’s responsibilities.

Motivational Story of Arunima Sinha

The year was 2011 when Arunima met with a train accident that changed her life. April 2011, Arunima was on the Padmavati Express train to Delhi to join the CISF after getting a call from the CISF.

A few thugs came near her and tried to snatch away her gold chain, Arunima was trying her best to save her chain, but a scuffle occurred.

She was pushed out of the running train when she realized she was already lying on the train tracks as another train from the other side approached.

She tried getting up, and while she could, the train ran over one of her legs which later had to be amputated.

She was lying on the track all night while many trains crossed each time, running over her leg. But unfortunately, she couldn’t help herself. Finally, the sun rose, and villagers saw her lying on the tracks. She was taken immediately to the nearby hospital. The Indian sports ministry provided her with the best possible treatment available and offered her a compensation of Rs 25,000.

However, later she was given additional compensation of two lakh rupees from the State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ajay Maken, because of the National outrage.

Moreover, for the same reason, she was also given a job recommendation in CISF and a job offer in Indian Railways. She got transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for four months. Furthermore, she was also offered a prosthetic leg absolutely free by a Delhi-based private company.

While in the hospital, she decided to climb Mount Everest. Her inspiration was the famous Indian Cricketer Yuvraj Singh. The fact that Yuvraj Singh fought against cancer and was successful in doing so alone inspired Arunima Sinha to do something revolutionary in her life. Later, when she was released, she prepared to climb Mount Everest, which she accomplished on May 21, 2013.

Career of Arunima Sinha

Arunima Sinha started her career as a volleyball and football player. Soon she started playing at a national level. After her trains accident, unfortunately, she couldn’t continue playing these sports. But this didn’t stop her; while in her recovery period and still in the hospital, she decided to climb Mount Everest.

After being released, she took an introductory mountaineering course at the Jawaharlal Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. After getting trained by Bachendri Pal, she climbed Mount Everest and became the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest and reach the summit. She reached the summit on May 21, 2013.

  • After her train mishap on April 12, 2011, a police investigation cast doubt on her account of what happened. She allegedly tried to commit suicide, according to the police. Contrary to the police’s assertion, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court ordered Indian Railways to compensate Arunima for her damages of $500,000.
  • Arunima’s claim to be a national-level volleyball player was cast into doubt when a senior SAI official stated that although it was possible to say that Arunima played at the national level based on certificates provided by her parents, the department and ministry had not yet determined whether or not she qualified as a national player on a specific level.
  • She was refused access to the Ujjain Mahakal temple in December 2017 because, according to the authorities, she had not adhered to the sanctum sanctorum dress code. After the incident, Arunima tweeted on her Twitter account – “I am very sorry to tell you that I felt greater pain in visiting Mahakal temple (at Ujjain) than scaling Everest. My disability was mocked there (at Mahakal).”
